Research Report on 2009 Floods and Landslides Disasters Caused by Typhoons 16(Ondoy), 17(Pepeng) and 18(Sante) in the Philippines
1.Introduction
The central and northern parts of Luzon Island in the Philippines were struck by three major typhoons in September and October 2009, resulting in serious flooding and landslides. This area includes the National Capital Region (NCR) , in other words, Metro Manila, and Rizal province which were hit hardest by flooding caused by Typhoon 16(Ondoy). Out of 10 million inhabitants, this typhoon affected 4.9 million and left 501 missing or dead. Typhoon 17(Pepeng) came in mid October, affecting 4.48 million inhabitants and another 501 missing or dead, mainly due to landslides. And then Typhoon 18(Sante) affected 0.8 million and left 39 missing or dead due to the heavy rains and flooding in the Lagna de Bay (Laguna Lake) coastal area. The National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention(NIED) in Japan responded by setting up a team to conduct field research in the Philippines with the assistance of the Disaster Prevention Forum. This team includes various fields of expertise to examine the flood disasters in NCR and the landslide and flood disasters in and around Baguio city. The research was mainly aimed at collecting as much data as possible and providing data for subsequent disaster research.
